Neck and Chin Liposuction

By Marius Bezuidenhout

Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, love handles, saddlebags, waist, things, knees, upper arms, cheeks, chin and neck. Although no type of liposuction is a substitute for dieting and exercise, liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods.

The proper angle of the neck-chin junction and a well defined jaw line represent one of the defining features of a youthful face. Fullness of the chin and/or a rounded out neck with poor jaw line definition can create the illusion of premature aging or being overweight, even in people who are not. The “double chin” or “full neck may be hereditary and be present at a younger age. Liposuction of the neck, in the appropriately selected patient, can redefine the contour of the mandible, restore the desired neck/chin angle, and eliminate the overweight appearance from the neck.

As people age, it’s common to develop deposits of fat in the neck and chin area, which change the once youthful contour. If you have taut, elastic skin in this region, liposuction may be able to re-sculpt the jaw line. Typically, liposuction of the neck and chin works best of patients in their 30s and 40s, whose skin is still resilient enough to return to shape after the excess fat is removed. In such candidates, the procedure may take the place of a lower face-lift. Because this type of liposuction generally involves smaller amounts of fat removal, it’s usually done as an outpatient procedure. You may notice results immediately after the procedure, though swelling can make it difficult to judge the outcome until several weeks have passed. About three months following the surgery, your final appearance should be visible. For those who have loose, hanging skin around the neck, liposuction alone probably won’t be sufficient to improve the area. Instead, you may also need a neck and face-lift, where muscles and skin are surgically re-positioned and excess skin is removed.
