The recent explosion of interest in cell replacement therapies and the use of cord blood banks for diabetes have driven primarily by the dramatic progress in allergenic islet cell transplantation. For the first time, the Edmonton group actually demonstrated that islet transplantation is a viable therapy for people who have diabetes.
This advance was dependent largely on progress in immunosuppressive drug therapy that allowed for a steroid-free regimen. Further advances in this area are likely to result in even better long term results as there is evidence that even the current improved drug regimens are toxic stem cells.
While the success of the Edmonton trial was an important proof of principle, it did not address the major problem with islet transplantation, which is actually the grossly inadequate supply of cadaveric pancreases as a source of islets. Solving this problem has been a major focus of research in stem cells biology and will surely have effects on stem cells banks.
Many different potential sources of cells for stem cells replacement, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, are being studied. Overall, three major sources of cells are being pursued. Those are embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells and cell lines.
Mainly because of the ethical concerns about cells, many studies have actually been directed towards inducing stem cell differentiation from adult stem cells, either from the pancreas or from other sources such as bone marrow. Although many investigators have claimed that stem cells from ectopic organs such as bone marrow can be induced to differentiate into a variety of cell types such as neurons, there have been no studies as yet in which cells have been generated from adult stem cells outside of the pancreas.
Questions have been raised recently about the plasticity of adult stem cells. The possibility that apparent differentiation may result from fusion of adult stem cells with differentiated cells has been raised. Elegant experiments using marked stem cells have not found evidence that bone marrow derived cells can differentiate into non hematopoietic lineage.
A great deal of effort has been made to identify stem cells within the pancreas. It has been known for some time that the pool of stem cells can be regenerated when placed under stress by a number of manipulations, including partial pancreatectomy, drugs, and immune medicated damage. A central question in cell biology concerns the identity of cells that give rise to the regenerated cells.

The conclusion here therefore is that a loss of weight can have a great impact on one's body in all sorts of ways. Diabetic patients who exercised had undone the damage done to cells that produce insulin because of obesity.

Hydration lowers the osmosis property of the blood while replacing the lost electrolytes in it. In the process, insulin is also replaced which results in the production of glucose and potassium in the cells.
But still, prevention is better than cure. If you maintain a proper record of your glucose levels in the blood, the chances of you suffering from this disease remains bleak.

Diabetes Deadly for Weighty Women

Four new studies show a link between obesity, diabetes, and cancer. And the link between diabetes and excess weight is already well known--extra weight puts you at greater risk to develop diabetes.
When you have diabetes, your need for insulin affects how likely you are to get cancer. But it is different for men and women. If you are a woman your risk of getting some kinds of cancer increases with insulin use.The information from these studies was released Friday December 7 2007 at the Annual International Conference on the Frontiers of Cancer Prevention Research which is held by the American Association for Cancer Research.
The results did not surprise scientists, who have thought along similar lines. Diabetics use a lot of insulin which along with other hormonal factors, increases cell production so more cells grow, including cancerous cells. The first study was done by the University of Minnesota, and those results showed that women with diabetes have a 50 percent greater chance of developing colorectal cancer.
The researchers tracked over 45,000 women who were taking part in breast cancer detection programs for over 8 years. Though they did not conclude exactly what is causing the increased risk, insulin use is likely the culprit. That was what the second study concluded. Diabetic women have a 300 percent greater chance of developing breast cancer, and their use of large amounts of insulin is probably the reason.
The second study, from Yale University, looked at C-peptide, a marker of insulin production, for 8 years. It found that the upper third of high C-peptide levels were 200 percent more likely to die from breast cancer than the lowest third measured.
The third study was not as much about diabetes as about the weight gain that so often causes it. This study was done at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. It showed that when women are found to have invasive breast cancer they should not gain any weight, because if they do, they will be much more likely to die from the breast cancer.
Several thousand women in the study were classed according to the body mass index. Women in the obese class were 2.4 times more likely to die of breast cancer than women in the normal body mass class.
Fat tissue produces more estrogen, and estrogen grows cancer cells. So the women are at greater risk for cancer and dying of it whether they are diabetic or overweight, or both. And the results with the men? The men are fortunate compared to the women. Testosterone like estrogen grows more cancer cells. But insulin reduces the amount of testosterone in men, so their chances of prostate cancer when diabetic are significantly reduced.
